The
link system
The
link system is one of the most basic of all the memory systems. This basic system
can be used for memorizing short lists of items, such as shopping lists, in which
each item is linked to or associated with the next. When using this sytem, you
will be using all of the memory principles that include
Synaesthesia
(The use of your senses.)
Association
Humor
Imagination
Color
Order and sequence
Exaggeration
Positive images
One
of the main reasons that the following technique increases memory is that you
will be exercising all parts of your brain both the left and right cortex while
utilizing your senses and imagination to the maximum thereby increasing the overall
power of your brain.
Imagine
you need to remember the following items:
1.
A pair of sunglasses
2. Sun lotion cream
3. Red Whine
4. Soap
5. Mineral water
6. Wholeweat bread
7. Eggs
8. bananas
9. Red
Roses
When
trying to remember a list of items such as a shopping list instead of scrambling
around for pieces of paper or trying to remember the items by simple repetition
and consequently forgetting at least two or three, you could simply apply the
memory principles as follows.
Imagine
yourself walking to the beach wearing a pair of sunglasses,
when you reach the beach you sit down soaking up the warmth of the sun. You can
feel the warmth of the sun on your body.
You
feel your skin getting burnt so you reach
for the packet of sun lotion cream. You squeeze
the tub of sun lotion cream only to find out that red
whine spills out of the end. Your body feels
sticky with the red whine so you choose to take a shower. You take a packet of
soap which you wash your self with and then
bathe in some cool mineral water to rinse
the soap off.
After
bathing in the cool mineral water you smell
the aroma of fresh wholeweat bread. This scent
drags you by the nose into the town. As the scent gets stronger you walk on some
eggs. You can feel
and hear the eggs break underneath your feet.
When reaching the bread shop you see the shop
owner spreading bananas over the bread. You
chomp on the piece of bread with banana spread. Imagine tasting
both the bread and banana in your mouth. When leaving the shop rose petals rain
down on you. You associate rose petals with
red roses which reminds you to buy a big bundle of red
roses for someone you love. Using your imaginative ability to exaggerate
the fragrance and visual appearance of the
roses.
